‘Free Our Feeds,’ is raising millions to build a social media network that escapes the grip of tech billionaires. At the heart of this initiative is the desire to create a decentralized ecosystem, where users are in control, and the monopoly of platforms like Twitter and Facebook is broken.
A Vision for Independent Social Media
The team behind Free Our Feeds is looking to raise $30 million over the next three years to fund a revolutionary shift in social media ownership. Their primary goal? To build a network of apps based on the AT Protocol, an open-source technology that powers Bluesky, a rising competitor to Twitter. This decentralized approach means users will have control over their data and the algorithms that shape their feeds.
Marc Faddoul, a key technical advisor, states, “We want to empower users with the freedom to choose where their data is hosted and which algorithms drive their content.”
With Bluesky gaining momentum and already attracting over 23 million users since its public debut in 2024, Free Our Feeds sees a unique opportunity to capitalize on the shifting tides of the social media era. The movement warns against a “de facto monopoly” should Bluesky remain the only platform running on the AT Protocol.
“This is a key moment,” Faddoul added. “The transformation in social media is imminent, and we aim to be at the frontline of it.”
Rallying Support
The movement has already raised over $67,000 through online donations and is seeking an immediate $4 million to kickstart a new non-profit foundation. With former executives from companies like Mozilla on board, Free Our Feeds aims to lead a technological revolution.
Could This Mark the End of Tech Billionaires’ Hold on Social Media?
The rise of decentralized networks offers a potential disruption to a market dominated by billionaires like Elon Musk (owner of X, formerly Twitter). By dismantling the traditional social media model, Free Our Feeds hopes to democratize how platforms are built and governed.
